December 2012

In spite of sweltering heat, a near capacity audience enjoyed a varied, well-chosen programme by Freeland Orchestra and West Oxfordshire Winds, in Eynsham Village Hall, with a collection in aid of the Nasio Trust, a local charity.

The orchestra played in  the first half and in the second half the stage was taken by West Oxfordshire Winds, a lively wind band with an exceptional number of clarinets, who performed a very enjoyable programme of mostly well-known pieces. It was very interesting to hear the theme from the old Hitchcock TV series...full of tricky chromatic passages, confidently overcome by the players. The familiar "Great Escape" was followed by the "Pizzicato Polka"...(what fun to hear this piece played by a wind band...surprisingly effective). The rousing finale, by which time the performers and their conductor must have been melting, was "Rock around the Clock", a great end to a most satisfying concert.
